Melbourne Heavy Vehicle Blitz Uncovers Widespread Compliance Offences

A recent heavy vehicle compliance operation in Melbourne’s south-east has highlighted ongoing safety and compliance challenges, with more than 50 offences detected during a targeted enforcement blitz.

The operation, known as Operation Hauler, involved a joint effort between Victoria Police, the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR), and the Victoria Police Heavy Vehicle Unit.

What the Operation Involved

The blitz focused on identifying non-compliance and unsafe driving behaviours that contribute to road trauma.

During the operation:

  • 65 heavy vehicles were intercepted
  • All drivers underwent preliminary breath and oral fluid testing
  • Full safety inspections were carried out on every vehicle

The operation comes in response to an increase in heavy vehicle-related collisions in the region over the past 12 months.

Key Offences Detected

Authorities reported a wide range of offences identified during the blitz, including:

  • 27 defect notices issued for unsafe or unroadworthy vehicles
  • 10 insecure load offences
  • 5 work diary breaches
  • 4 offences for driving unsafe or unroadworthy vehicles
  • 3 unregistered vehicles
  • 2 unlicensed driving offences
  • 1 fatigue breach
  • 1 mobile phone offence (use of handheld device)

The high number of defect notices and load-related issues highlights ongoing concerns around vehicle condition and load restraint practices.

Why These Operations Matter

Compliance blitzes like Operation Hauler are designed to reduce risk on the road by identifying unsafe vehicles and behaviours before they lead to serious incidents.

The results show that while many operators are doing the right thing, there are still areas where compliance needs improvement — particularly in:

  • Vehicle maintenance and roadworthiness
  • Load restraint and securing freight
  • Accurate work diary management
  • Driver licensing and registration compliance

Even a single lapse in these areas can significantly increase the risk of accidents involving heavy vehicles.

What This Means for Drivers and Operators

For drivers and transport businesses, the message is clear: compliance is critical to safety.

Operations like this reinforce the importance of:

  • Conducting regular vehicle checks and maintenance
  • Ensuring loads are properly secured before departure
  • Keeping work diaries accurate and up to date
  • Staying within fatigue limits
  • Maintaining all required licences and registrations

At Logbook Checker, we see compliance not just as a regulatory requirement, but as a key part of keeping drivers safe and protecting businesses from unnecessary risk.

Staying Ahead of Compliance

With increased enforcement activity across the country, staying on top of compliance has never been more important.

Being proactive about safety and documentation helps drivers and operators avoid penalties, reduce downtime, and most importantly, keep everyone on the road safer.

We’ll continue to share updates like this to help the industry stay informed and prepared.
