Newell Highway Rest Area Closed at Grong Grong Until Mid-April

Truck drivers travelling along the Newell Highway will need to plan ahead, with the Henwood Rest Area at Grong Grong, NSW, now closed for several months due to essential road works.

Transport for NSW (TfNSW) has confirmed the rest area will remain unavailable until mid-April, while upgrade works are carried out to rebuild and widen sections of the highway.

What’s Happening

The closure is part of a broader safety upgrade, with single-lane closures in place between Gawnes and Connells to improve road conditions and reduce risk for all road users.

Construction is underway:

  • Monday to Saturday
  • 7:00am to 6:00pm

During this period, drivers will encounter traffic control measures and changed traffic conditions through the work zone.

Alternative Rest Options

With the Henwood Rest Area closed, truck drivers are advised to use alternative stopping points, including:

  • Firetail Rest Area
  • Narrandera truck parking bay

Drivers should factor these changes into their fatigue management and trip planning, particularly on longer regional runs.

Speed Limits and Safety

A reduced speed limit of 40km/h is in place for the duration of the project. TfNSW is urging all drivers to slow down, follow traffic control directions, and remain alert through the work area.

Plan Ahead

Temporary rest area closures can have a real impact on compliance and fatigue management. Staying informed about closures like this helps drivers avoid last-minute decisions and unnecessary stress on the road.

At Logbook Checker, we encourage drivers and operators to regularly check route conditions and plan rest breaks ahead of time — especially during long-term road works.

We’ll continue to share updates that help keep drivers safe, compliant, and moving.ns continue, staying informed will be critical for anyone operating in the heavy vehicle sector.
