More Green Reflector Rest Areas Open Across Regional NSW

More Green Reflector Rest Areas Open Across Regional NSW

Truck drivers travelling through regional New South Wales now have more opportunities to find safe places to stop, with an additional 10 green reflector rest area sites opening along key freight routes in the Upper Hunter.

The expansion is part of the NSW Government’s ongoing efforts to improve road safety, support fatigue management, and make it easier for heavy vehicle operators to identify suitable stopping locations, particularly during night-time driving or poor visibility conditions.

A Simple Idea That’s Making a Difference

The green reflector system was originally developed by respected truck driver advocate Rod Hannifey and has quickly gained support across the transport industry.

The concept is simple.

Green reflectors are installed on roadside guideposts leading up to informal heavy vehicle rest areas, giving drivers advance warning that a safe stopping location is approaching.

The system uses a clear 3-2-1 marker sequence:

  • Three green reflectors indicate a rest area is 500 metres ahead
  • Two green reflectors indicate 250 metres remaining
  • One green reflector marks the entrance to the stopping bay

The goal is to help drivers identify rest opportunities early enough to make safe decisions, especially when fatigue is becoming a factor.

New Sites Added Across the Upper Hunter

The latest rollout includes 10 new green reflector sites located along the Golden Highway and New England Highway:

Golden Highway

  • 6 kilometres east of Denman
  • 4 kilometres east of Mount Thorley
  • 10 kilometres east of Warkworth

New England Highway

  • 6 kilometres west of Ardglen
  • Liddell
  • 14 kilometres west of Liddell
  • 18 kilometres west of Liddell
  • 4 kilometres east of Muswellbrook
  • 3 kilometres north of Wingen
  • 1 kilometre south of Murulla

These locations add to the 14 green reflector sites that were installed across southern NSW last year.

Supporting Fatigue Management and Driver Safety

For truck drivers, knowing where the next safe stopping opportunity is located can make a significant difference.

Fatigue remains one of the most serious safety risks facing the heavy vehicle industry, particularly on long regional routes where formal rest areas can be limited.

The green reflector system helps drivers:

  • Identify rest opportunities earlier
  • Make safer fatigue management decisions
  • Avoid driving past suitable stopping locations
  • Improve compliance with fatigue regulations

Industry feedback on the program has been overwhelmingly positive, with many drivers reporting that the markers have made it easier to locate safe places to stop when needed.

Part of a Broader Safety Investment

The rollout forms part of the NSW Government’s $11.9 million Heavy Vehicle Rest Stop Minor Works Program.

The program is focused on improving rest area infrastructure across the state through upgrades such as:

  • Improved lighting
  • Better signage
  • Enhanced pedestrian safety
  • Additional amenities
  • Improved rest area accessibility

These investments aim to create safer and more practical rest opportunities for drivers operating across regional NSW.

More Sites Planned for the Future

The NSW Government has indicated it will continue working with industry stakeholders to identify additional locations for green reflector sites and further improvements to heavy vehicle rest areas.

For truck drivers travelling regional freight routes, that’s welcome news.

While green reflectors may seem like a small addition to the roadside environment, their impact can be significant. By making rest opportunities easier to find, they support safer driving, better fatigue management, and ultimately help get drivers home safely at the end of the day.
